With the rationalised GST slabs set to come into force on September 22, Amazon India anticipates a significant shift in consumer purchasing behaviour. It would encourage consumers to upgrade to higher-value items, such as TVs or larger screens, within their existing budgets.
Zeba Khan, Director of Consumer Electronics at Amazon India, said that it (tax rate rationalisation) couldn’t come at a better time for the upcoming Great Indian Festival, which is beginning on September 23.
Khan said that the GST initiative will empower customers, enabling them to “really get access to the latest specs and latest technology products.” She felt that “premium products will continue to sell more and this GST boost will actually make them even stronger,”
“This financial benefit will enable them to not only buy the products that they have been aspiring to buy maybe they couldn’t buy earlier,” she said.
She stated that the company provided AI-driven shopping recommendations, allowing customers to easily compare products, watch videos, and make informed purchasing decisions.
When asked about the base of sellers on the platform, Khan said that Amazon has 17 lakh sellers nationally across all categories.
Smartphones are experiencing strong double-digit growth, with Hyderabad standing out as a top-performing city. Nationally, the ₹30,000 and above segment for smartphones is experiencing strong growth, with double-digit growth.
In the TV segment, large screen models (55 inches and above) are growing strongly with a double-digit growth.
During last year’s Amazon Great India Festival, the premium smartphone segment (over Rs 30,000) saw the highest year-on-year growth (among all price segments, in volume).
5G smartphones saw a significant growth in the budget segment (under the Rs 10,000 segment).
